The Liver Building was considered one of the world's first skyscrapers when it was built, one of the first buildings worldwide to be constructed from reinforced concrete. It remained the tallest building in Europe for more than 20 years after its construction. Larger than the clock faces on Big Ben, at 25 ft in diameter, the Liver Building's clocks are illuminated only at night. They were started nearly a month before the building was opened, on 22 June 1911, at the exact moment that King George V was crowned, leading them to become known as George's clocks.
